Frequently Asked Questions
How did you become an advocate for women in other countries?
I became aware of the shameful and marginalized roles of women as a result of volunteer service in teaching, consulting, and participating in mission endeavors in numerous developing countries. It had such an effect upon me that I felt compelled to be an advocate for these women. It has become a passion for me.
Why did you write two books regarding disenfranchised women?
In Women I Can’t Forget I wrote about women in South Africa, Peru, India, China, Haiti, Albania and Thailand. Since I continued to visit other countries I felt that I needed to tell their story as well so I wrote The Price and Privilege of Being a Woman describing the Aborigine women of Australia, the native women of Alaska, as well as women in Ecuador, Guatemala, Kosovo, Macedonian and Russia.
To what degree are women of the world marginalized?
- Women receive only 10% of the world’s income.
- Of all the illiterate people in the world 66% are women.
- 70% of the poor of the world are women.
- Of those that are sick 75% are women.
- 200 million women are battered annually.
Is there more violence and unacceptable behavior toward women who live in unindustrialized or undeveloped countries than those women living in industrialized countries?
There is abuse of women in every country but my experience indicates that women in undeveloped countries experience more ill-treatment and exploitation than do women in other countries. There are numerous reasons why such as illiteracy, their culture, their religion, and of course patriarchal control.
Was it difficult to gather information regarding these women?
Indigenous women are more guarded in discussing their husband’s behavior with a stranger so much of my information has come from friends in each country, missionaries, humanitarian workers plus my own observation.
Do you honestly think civil and acceptable treatment of women can or will occur in most countries within the next 10 years?
Yes, it could happen but it will have to be deliberate and even then it will be ever so slow. A patriarchal mind set has been embedded in men and women’s mind set for centuries and it will not change easily. Education will be essential to assist women in becoming aware of their civil rights and that a life free of abuse is achievable.
Do you speak often and if so to what type of groups?
Yes, I do speak often to various groups but primarily to women’s groups. I have spoken in at least seven states including Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Rotary and Lions Clubs, Daughters of the American Revolution, numerous churches and women’s Christian retreats, Library and Book Clubs, SC American Association of University Women, Global Women seminars, National political seminars, and University Sororities.
